Day 1: Oh no, not him again!

Ok, this isn't actually Day 1. But having started and then quit, I can't really count the real Day 1. Having said that, I was really glad to see some familiar faces. I didn't realize it, but in the short time I took Judo Class out here before, I had grown rather fond of the people, the art, and the dojo. There were quite a few people there that I hadn't met, all of which were friendly. I felt at home immediately. The only disappointment of the night came when I realized that Sensei Ed Byers would not be there.

Now that I got that off my chest, let me start by saying it's really great to be back on the mat. I have been mega-stressed at work lately, and the IRS is breathing down my neck due to a reporting mistake by my stock brokerage. I don't drink (much!) anymore, I don't smoke (at all) anymore--I've needed an outlet. So after Paul got on my nerves at work Tuesday, I decided I would come to class just so I could abuse him. My moment of triumph came when, while performing a variation on Ippon Seoinage, I accidentally dropped to the wrong knee and his ribs landed on the knee that was supposed to drop. Ahhh yes, now I feel better.

The warm up was great, you'd be suprised at how easy it is to learn what looks like very complicated acrobatics. Within 5 minutes I was tumbling across the mat with the rest of the gang, albeit with less speed and grace. But I know that will come with time, so no worries there. We studied a wide array of techniques tonight. From throws to grappling to arm locks to one of Sensei Gerard's special techniques designed to umm, let's just say "end the fight" and leave it at that.

The lesson ended with a randori grappling session (read: best workout ever). Me and Paul beat each other up for a little while, but the defining moment of the night came when I was trounced by, as she put it, "a 100 pound girl".

I will definitely be back on Monday. My muscles ache, my spirit is at full strength, my mind is on full alert and my stress level is sitting at absolute zero. Mission accomplished.

It's amazing to see that you have discovered the real secret of judo so soon: We all go to beat on Paul.
